Dr. S. Gunasekaran was born on 3rd June 1954 in Kathiyavadi Village, Ranipet District. He completed his B.Sc. in Physics (Tamil Medium) from Presidency College, Chennai, M.Sc. in Physics from St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirapalli, Ph.D. in Molecular Spectroscopy from Anna University, and D.Sc. from the University of Madras.
He began his teaching career in 1978 at Pachaiyappa’s College, Chennai. Currently, he serves as Dean (R&D) at St. Peter’s Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai, where he established the Sophisticated Analytical Instrumentation Facility (SAIF-SPIHER). His research focuses on the applications of spectroscopy in Materials Science, Medical Physics, Environmental Science, and Molecular Dynamics—a field he terms “Spectrophysics.” He has guided 83 Ph.D. candidates, published over 475 papers, holds 1 patent, and has more than 9,300 citations (h-index 47, i10-index 214).

Dr. Gunasekaran founded the Indian Spectrophysics Association (ISPA) in 1998, promoting spectroscopy research, education, and social development. Under ISPA, he has organized 28 international, 35 national, and 16 state-level conferences and awarded numerous researchers, including 86 ISPA Dr. S. Gunasekaran Awards.
He has contributed extensively to school education in Tamil Nadu, authoring 14 textbooks and serving on syllabus committees. Dr. Gunasekaran also served as Registrar of Periyar University (2008–2011), supporting research initiatives and instituting Sir CV Raman Awards.
His accolades include the Millennium Research Pioneer Award (2024), Tamil Nadu Scientist Award, multiple Lifetime Achievement Awards, and recognition in the Top 2% Scientists (2021, Stanford University), among others.
